The Implosion Method

  Fat Man itself was a huge bomb, weighing in at approximately 10,200 pounds.  With a length of 10.6 feet and a diameter of five feet, Fat Man was not a child's toy. Fat Man had an explosive yeild of about 21 kilotons, or 21 thousand tons pounds of TNT. In order for the explosion to occur, the chemical explosives had to go off at at a time down to the nanosecond, and had to burn at precisely the same rate. One miscalculation would have resulted in a dud, which means that the ordanance did not explode. Fat Man was a bomb truly ahead of its time.
